“THE SILENT FIVE.”
BAND OF BAD BOYS. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE, Friday. The doings of a band of boys, whom tiic police stated were known by the caption of “The Silent Five,’’ were investigated in the Dannevirke Court today before Mr J. L. Hewitt, S.M. A rather startling state of juvenile crime on a wholesale scale was disclosed. The youths concerned were Reginald Rainey, who, on a charge of theft, was remanded till the next sitting of the court 'for enquiries t-o be made; Edward Powell Nicholas, William John ■Steel, John Edward Phillips and Harold Sydney 'Chandler, against whom a series of charges of breaking, entering and theft were preferred, were all committed to the Borstal Institution to be detained for a period not exceeding three years, the Magistrate considering this the best course to adopt in the interests of the community and the accused.
In addition, Garth Francis Durrant, another youth, on four charges of theft, one of which he admitted, was also committed to'three years’ detention in the Borstal Institute, while a Maori lad, Wirimu Porora, on four .charges ofi breaking, entering and theft, was ordered to be handed over to the Education authorities.
