N.S.W. SENSATION.
M.L.C.’s WANT PAY. STEP TOWARDS ABOLITION. SYDNEY, Saturday. A sensation lias been caused in political -circles by the presentation to the Government of a memorial -signed by more than 24 members of the Legislative Council, asking for payment, for members of the Upper House. Ministerial circles regard the memorial as the deciding factor in the Council’s abolition, and the new appointees'will bo put to the test to enable the Government to see if the pledges they gave the party to abolish the Upper House are genuine.
Tlio payment demanded is £3OO annually. Members making, the demand include lanti-Labour as well as Labour supporters. It is stated that after the petition was presented to the Government some of the members of the Council struck with the object of forcing the Government’s hand, there being a remarkable falling-off in Council attendances. Mr Lang (Premier), however, countered this move by the simple expedient of threatening to bring down the Legislative Council Abolition Bill, which is already being drafted. —P.A.
