The catering for both days of the ,show was referred to the luncheon committee for consideration. Donations for the poultry section wore received as follows: —L. 8. Nieol, A. Donald, IT. E. Vmith, S. A. Mills, G. Dallas, J. Bradbury, D. Sim, E. Solomon, F. (A Evans, X.Z. Bonn and Mercantile Co., N.F. Farmers’ Co-op. Distributing Co., F. Keen, T. C. Morris, L. G. Butcher. A committee wa.s set up to interview the Masterton motor garage proprietors concerning the erection of additional permanent car stand's.
A clause in the finance committee’s report, recommending the appointment .of eight committeemen to complete the town canvas*, caused some discussion. When the chairman asked for nominations to the canvassing committee, Mir R. .1. Burton suggested that the. town canvass should be left entirely to ‘lie town members. Twelve months ago. he said. Mr D. Ogilvy, the treasurer, lmd promised on behalf of the town that if the country would find £ISOO the town would li ml a similar amount. The country men had found their quota, but the town members had apparently lot them down. They had only one representative (Mr Kent])) at the meeting, which was another apparent lack of interest. The Carterton Association, continued'Mr Burton, could come and canvass Masterton and do better than the Masterton Association could. Mr G. d. Bennett: I think the £ISOO was to be raised in tlwr town partly through the gala week. Mr W. IT. Harcombe: But the .show was not held, and it placed the Gala, Week Executive in a false position. Mr Bennett: Well, we would like a guarantee that they are going to carry out their promise. Will the gala be held thus show? The secretary said the general opinion among those interested in the Gala was, that it would not be held this year. There were complaints on all sides that business had uot been good, and he did not think the business men were prepared to go on with it this year. Mr Bennett: But Mr Ogilvy gave us an undertaking that the l money would be found, and T presume be was speaking on behalf of the town. As far as we are concerned, our business might have been poor also this year. Mr P. M. Compton: Let the matter drop. It is only raising the town versus country argument again. It was eventually decided; that the president, vice-president and treasurer form a committee to meet the Gala Week Executive and ascertain their views on the possibility of holding the gala this year.
