HUTS SWEPT AWAY.
FLOOD IN WAIR/3AKARBRL SETTLEMENT IN DANGER. (By Telegra,nh—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday, i As a result of a flood in the Waimakariri river, a serious position has been created at Katanga, a, week-end settlement at Stewart’s Gully. The flood washed away the groyne at this place, and since that the river has been eating away the bank. About 6 o’clock yesterday morning it became evident that, owing to the continued erosion, some of the huts were in serious danger of being washed away. The occupant's of the huts were aroused, and furniture and other movables were shifted. Later two of the huts were swept down the river. The secretary of the Waimaknriri River Trust said last night that the river was threatening to cut right through the settlement, and in his opinion there was not one hut that was safe. Last night many of the owners of huts at the settlement were dismantling them and removing everything. Kaianga is a popular resort with between sixty and seventy huts.
