A CLOSE SHAVE.
FROM A BALKAN WAR. LEAGUE’S INTERVENTION. LONDON, Saturday. Tlie full report of the Rumbold Commission, set up 'by tlio League of Nations to investigate the cause of the recent conflict on the Graeco-Bulgarian frontier, reveals that an outbreak of trouble with incalculable consequences was only missed by a close shave. On the morning of October 23rd the Bulgarians’ appeal ,to the League reached Geneva. Tile Secretary-Gen-eral immediately telegraphed to Paris to ]\l. Briand, president of the Council, when sent out by 1 o’clock an urgent order to both Governments to cease hostilities. At that very moment a battle was imminent. The Greek Government had ordered a general offensive to begin at 8.30 on the following morning, and the forces on both sides were large, enough to make the consequences of the battle serious. The Greek Government, accepting M. Briand’s order, sent out to the frontier an instruction to cease operations. The instruction, was received only at 0 o’clock, 2't hours before the offensive was due to begin.
The Commission definitely declares that. Greece was responsible, and recommends that Greece pay Bulgaria £30,000 for the material damage done, and also a moral indemnify of £15,000 in respect of loss of lives.—Ans. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
