TIMBER MILL FIRE.
ONE OF THE SIDELIGHTS. | AN UNCONQUERABLE SPIRIT. The scene of desolation which greeted Mr. C. E. Daniell upon his return from Wellington this morning was sufficient to have almost broken the heart of any business man. The huge factory that had been his “hobby” as well as one of his main sources of revenue for years past, with its accumulation off machinery, etc., which only time can gather together, lay at his feet a total loss. This, taken together with th© fact that the insurance amounted t® only £2OOO to meet an estimated loss of about £II,OOO, was indeed a blowr that might well knock the spirit- out of? any man. But Mr. Daniell accepted the trying position with a spirit that gained the silent admiration of thos© present. After viewing the scene, although visibly affected, he calmly remarked to his son, “Well, Archie, wet shall have to get to work and clears, up; wo are far from beaten yet.” Ifc was this indomitable spirit which th© hardy pioneers of New' Zealand showedSC in the early days, and this unconquerable spirit "was still present this morning with the proprietor of the destroyed mill as he gazed upon tha havoc wrought by the disastrous fire. Mr. Daniell will have general sympathy in the loss he has sustained —thai loss this district has sustained—but ifc could easily be seen by his undismayed attitude, that, with the assistance offthe younger members of the firm, thera will rise from the ashes of the old factary a structure of even a more' substantial nature. It may be mentioned, in passing, that Mr. Daniell sustained a similar loss about 23 years ago, when the old mill in Chapel street was destroyed by fire.
