SHORTAGE OF CLERGY.
POSITION IN ENGLAND. LONDON, Wednesday. Recommendations of a far-reaching nature are contained in the report of the committee appointed by the Archbishop of Canterbury and York to consider the shortage of candidates for Holy Orders. The report declares that intellectual difficulties arc one of the serious obstacles to men who, otherwise, wish to enter the Church. The committee, therefore, declares its belief that it would bring relief if it was decided that the 39 articles were no longer a satisfactory statement for the purpose of assent of opinion. An expressed restatement of these principles was required. Also a statement should be made from the Episcopate as a whole to the, effect that they would not regard preplexity or uncertainty on some clauses of the Creed as a necessary barrier to ordination. Such difficulties should be considered individually. / The number of clergy ordained decreased bv 2850 in ,the last decade, compared with 1005-14. —Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
