VICTORIA v. WANGANUI,

The Victorians commenced a two-day match against Wanganui in beautiful weather. The wicket was fast and the outfield dead. The visitors won the toss and sent the home team in. The innings closed just after lunch for 170. Victoria occupied the creases for the remainder of the afternoon. Mayne and IT. Austin gave the side a good start by putting on <l2 for the first wicket. but the next three went cheaply, and at tea four were out for S 9. There was a big change made in the aspect of the game when Millar and Woodfull got together. The former was particularly vigorous at times, while Woodfull showed skill in his placements. Millar staved at the crease till stumps
were drawn. The local fielding was good all round. Scores: — Wanganui 170 (Holland 37, Treadwell .74, London 22). Bowling: labeling 2 for 23, Willis 3 for 20. Victoria, 7 wickets for 200 (Mayne 38, IJ. Austin 28, Woodfull 27, Millar not out 99). NEW ZEALAND TEAM.
PATRICK APPOINTED CAPTAIN. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The New Zealand Cricket Counicl has appointed Patrick (Canterbury) captain of the New Zealand team for the first test match against the Victorians. Members of the New Zealand team will assemble at Wellington next Thursday. O. G. Wilson will act as manager of the New Zealand team in Wellington, and H. M. Taylor will be manager of the second test foam, which will play in Christ church a week later.
