Their Excellencies the Governor-Gen-eral and the 'Viscountess Jellicoe left Wellington to-day on farewell visits to Wanganui and New Plymouth. They have accepted an invitation to attend the races at Wanganui, and on Friday His Excellency will open the new woollen mills at Aramolio. Their Excellencies have arranged to arrive at New Plymouth on Monday next, and to return to Wellington on September 18th. Whilst at New Plymouth His Excellency will unveil the War Memorial Cenotaph, and present his shooting trophy to the New Plymouth High School. Their Excellencies and family expect to leave the Dominion for England by the s.s. Tahiti, sailing from Wellington on or about November 25th. They propose to sail from Melbourne by the s.s. Mongolia on December 23rd. Mr R. E. Hornblow, Mayor of Dargaville, was on a short visit to Masterton yesterday, renewing old friendships.

Mr J. W. Kershaw, chairman of the Wairarapa Power Board, was unable to attend yesterday’s meeting on account of illness.

Miss Olive Ravner’s many friends will regret to learn that she has entered the Glenwood private hospital (Cole street), where sh e has undergone an operation.

Mr and Mrs H. B. Dyer to-day left Masterton for Wanganui by motor ear, owing to the sudden and severe illness of the former’s brother, Mr Wilford Dyer.

Mrs D. Allen, of Macara street, Masterton, has received word from Chicago that her brother, Mr H. W. Cooper, gained his degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery on June 16th, at the Nortli-Weet-ern University Dental School. At th e meeting of the Masterton Borough Council last evening, the following motion was passed in silence: “ That this Council places on record its very deep regret at the untimely death of Health Inspector Cairns, and tenders to Mrs Cairns and family its heartfelt sympathy in their irreparable 1056.”

Mr M. E. Deuniston, of Wellington, received an urgent call to Masterton yesterday because of the illness of his son, who was on holiday here, and had to undergo an immediate operation for appendicitis. The operation was performed last evening at the Cole street hospital, and was successful.

A Press Association message from London announces that the Rev. Frederick Molyneux has been appointed assistant Bishop of Melanesia. Mr Molyneaux served in Mesopotamia as chaplain, and was mentioned in dispatches. He will sail for New Zealand in June, accompanied by a band of recruits for missionary work. A London cable states that Canon Donaldson, of Peterborouvh, will succeed Bishop Barnes in the Canonry of Westminster. He came into prominence in 1905, as the organiser of the march of unemployed from Leicester to London. He is a confirmed Christian and was the founder of the Church Socialist League. In 1913 he led a deputation of Church of England clergy to the Premier, to press the women ’s suffrage question. Last year he organised and presented the Memorial of Clergy to the Labour members of Parliament. The funeral of the late Mr James Cairns was attended yesterday afternoon by a large and representative number of citizens and settlers from all parts of the Wairarapa. The Rev. J. Davie read the burial service. Messrs H. E. Hart, C. W. Rutherforl, J. Allan, G. Peterson (Palmerston North). W. White and N. V. Dyett were pall-bear-ers. The Health Department was represented by Dr. W. Findlay, District Health Ollleer. A number of Borough Councillors and representatives of various local bodies attended. Among the 24 wreaths were some from the Eketahuna Borough Council and staff, and the Masterton Technical School Director and staff.
