THE PAERAU STUD

DISPERSAL SALE. The dispersal sale of Mr. R. Buick’s Paerau stud sheep and flock sheep was held yesterday at the Solway showgrounds by Messrs. Levin and Co., in conjunction with Messrs Wright, Stephenson and (Jo. Mr. J. B. Thomson acted as auctioneer for the former firm and Mr. ,). C. Broad for the latter. There was an attendance of about 200 from all parts of the district and from Hawke’s Bay, Nelson and Wanganui. Owing to the high prices which were paid for the annual surplus drafts from both the Southdown and the Romney studs buyers operated with confidence. The sheep, moreover, were shown in first class condition, and a very satisfactory sale resulted. Mr. Buick, whose Southdown stud is one of the best in New Zealand, purchased one of the rams recently imported by Messrs. Slack Brothers, of Qtaki, and many of the best owes offered wore in lamb to this sire. Competition for these animals was noticeably good. Romney stud rams sold at up to 20 guineas, and flocks to lOgns. In Southdowns, one-shear ewes in lamb to the imported ram sold up to 16-lgns, 2-shear ditto to 24gns, 3-shear do. to 20gns, 4-shear do. to lOlgns, and 5-shear to lOgns. Ewe lambs made up to 16gns. The imported ram himself brought 85gns, and the stud ram Maheno 20gns. The highest price fora stud ram lamb by Maheno was 31gns, and others by the same sire brought 10 to 2ogns. Flock ram lambs sold exceptionally well at from fit to lOIgns: and the bigger proportion from 8 to 9gns. Most of them went to local breeders. The Romneys were not sheep of outstanding merit, though many were good useful animals. Ewe lambs realised up to 9 4 gns, and 1. 2, and 3-shear ewes up to sgns. Stud Romney hoggets brought up 1r 20 gns., and flock ram lambs to 11 gns.
