Royal Divorce is one of the regular workers on the track, his tasks being restricted to easy pacing. He is building up into a beautiful horse. Petunia, which was disappointing on the flat, has run one or two good races over hurdles, and is making good progress at Riccarton in his education at this branch of the sport. In company with Red Kriss on Saturday he gave a good exhibition of fast, clean jumping. Peneus seems to have recovered the form which he showed as a two-year-old, for North Island exchanges credit the son of Boniform with fully extending the English mare Glentruin in the decision of the Hawke’s Bay Stakes. The trip by sea to Napier may have affected Glentruin to some extent, but nevertheless Peneus’s form will be watched with interest when winter weights are the rule. His display on the second day was not up to his first day’s form. F. D'. Jones’s record for the Northern tour was ten w T ins, one second and two thirds. Ballymena’s successes place him second to Biplane as the biggest winning three-year-old owned in the Dominion. Horses trained by Jones have now won three Trentham Gold Cups, two Awapuni Gold Cups, the G. G. Stead Memorial Cup, and the J. D. Ormond Memorial Gold Cup.

It is reported that the aged gelding Sir Solo was killed last week while out with a hunting pack at Dannevirke. Amongst Sir Solo’s most notable turf successes when owned by Mr Fred Dorset were his victories in the Grand National Hurdles in 1910, the Manawatu Cup in 1912, the Wellington Cup in 1913-14, while he had. numerous other successes to his credit, his stake winnings being over £BOOO. The death of Sir Solo, according to an exchange, occurred in rather an unexpected manner on Wednesday last. He had. been given to Mr Brace Mack ay by his owner, Mr Walter Garrett, on the horse ’s retirement from the turf, on condition that the recipient retained possession of him and furnished him with a good home. He had gone on well in one of the early runs of the hounds, and was walking down a hill when he suddenly collapsed, gave a kick, and died instantly, from what cause is unknown. Earlier in the day, on liis way to the meet, he had been very perky. Mr Maekay had intended to lend him to a friend to ride, and on the way had asked him if lie had ever been on a horse that had dropped dead. He was answered in the negative, and Mr Maekay explained that he had, and that it had behaved shortly before expiring just as his own mount, Sir Solo, was doing. It was an idle remark,. but deterred the friend from accepting the mount on the veteran to follow the hounds, and it surely wms a coincidence that Sir Solo dropped dead later in the day.
