SEIZURE OF TOMOKA.

Captain McCoy, master of the British schooner Toinoka, which was seized by United tates revenue cutters, six miles oft' shore, is 3(i years old and is an American born. Ho maintained a defiant attitude when arraigned in the Federal Court here. McCoy insisted that he had a right to sell liquor anywhere outside the three-mile limit. He and his crew are held on £IOOO bail each.
The sum of £12,000 in cash, wliic.li the revenue officers took from the schooner, was returned to McCoy.
When he was taken to the New Jersey Federal Court to answer further charges of rum-running he was released on £3OOO bail.
McCoy declared that the crew of the Tomoka had not attempted to fire on the revenue cutter. He said: “I am an American and would have thrown the crew overboard if they had tried to fire. ’ ’
The British Vice-Consul (Mr Leonard Parrish) was present at the hearings, but took no part in the proceedings. The Tomoka, which is tied up at the lower end of New York, is drawing thousands of spectators and the incident is treated in the Press like an old fashioned pirate tale. —Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. BOOTLEGGER WHISKY. f CHICAGO, Tuesday.* The Philadelphia police and health oliieials are alarmed by the week-end deaths from bad liquor and a number of intoxications, both of which were greater than last week. At present the reports are still incomplete, but they indicate that there were eight cases of death, a hundred were confined to hospitals, and five hundred were arrested.
The police learned that a large consignment of adulterated liquor was sent to Philadelphia by various runners for the holiday season. This is believed to bo the cause of the unprecedented situation.
The police have issued a warning declaring that these eight deaths should lie a lesson to all patrons of the bootlegger that his whisky in liquid death. —Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
