Mr J. A. Connell, of Wellington, and formerly of TarStahi, is on a visit ,to Masterton. Dr. M. B. Tweed has been, elected!?** surgeon to the Carterton Druids’ Lodge and will take up his duties in January. Mrs Horace Hunt left Wellington yesterday for America by the Maunganui. Mrs Hunt intends to pursue her vocal studies under Madame d’Alvarez. Mr Len Barnes, the Wellington baritone, returned yesterday from a four years’ sojourn in America and England. Mr L. L. Grimwade, who has been lecturing in New Zealand in favour of the League of Nations, will occupy the pulpit at the Masterton Congregational Church on Sunday evening. Mr Fiebig, a student of the Methodist Theological College, Auckland, will take up the duties of supply during the absence on account of health of the Rev. B. F. Rothwell. The marriage has been arranged, and will shortly take place, between Miss Maud Bolton, daughter of Mr and Mrs S. Bolton, “Oete,” Pahiatua, and Noel Grant, son of Mrs John Grantfly" “Grant Tully,” Woodville. The death is announced in Hastings of Mr Ernest Nelson, fourth son of Mr William Nelson, of Waikato, Tomoana. Mr Ernest Nelson had been an invalid for some years, the result of an accident. The death occurred about 12.30 o’clock this afternoon of Mr. Georg® McKay, of “Greenfields,” Wangaehu, a well-known and highly respected settler of the district. The funeral will take place on Friday. The following teachers have been appointed by the Wellington Education Board: —East Taratahi, sole teacher, Mrs E. M. Baillie; Puketoi, sole teacher, Mrs A. McKay; Mangatainoku, assistant, Miss E. S. Britland; Masterton. West, assistant, Miss V. E. Burgess.

The wedding of Miss Catherine Lissey Levett, daughter of Mr and Mrs C. A. J. Levett, of Feilding, to Mr Robert Mackenzie Vvatson, SM., of Feilding, son of Mr and Mrs William Watson, The Terrace, Wellington, took place at Feilding yesterday.

A Press message from Gisborne tes that the'Hon. G. Coates inspected the authorised route of the Gisborne southwards railway, and spent the night at Ruakituri. He left this morning for the Urewera County on a two days’ horseback journey to Whakatane. The Minister is accompanied by Mr K. S. Williams, M.P., Mr Furkett (engineer-in-ehief), Mr McVilly (general manager of railways), and Mr Jones (assistant engineer of railways). .

The retirement of the Rev. T. G. Brooke, general secretary of Home Missions of the Methodist Church of New Zealand, was announced at the sitting of the Auckland district synod. Mr

Brooke entered the ministry in 1879, aud in 1906 was chairman of the Wanganui district and president of the conierenee. In 1909 he was appointed to his present position. ; When Mr Brooke took cffice, the circuit income from the Home Mission fund was £2445, as against £7055 to-day, an increase of 188 per cent. Boddington) reported to the meeting of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon that Mr D. Ogilvy had informed him that he (Mr Ogilvy) was unable, owing to the pressure of other business, to accept the position of vicepresident of the Chamber. Mr C. E. Daniell said that, as Mr Ogilvy had been appointed to the position without his sanction having been first obtained, it was only fair to accept Mr Ogilvy’s resignation. This was done, and. the. question of appointing a vice-president was left over till the next meeting.

At St. Paul’s, Knightsbridge, on October 11th, the rvedding took place .of Mr Cecil Marmaduke Pickthall and Mrs Charlotte Mary Perkins. The bridegroom is a son of the late Mr. W. M. Pickthall and Mrs Pickthall (formerly of Dartmouth, Devon and Ceylon), and the bride is one of the daughters of Harold Beauchamp, and the Lieut.-Colonel J. C. C. Perkins, Indian Army. The bride was givenaway by Sir Charles Greenway, and the choral service was performed by Prebendary Leith Boyd.

A Timaru telegram states that the citizens of South Canterbury last night presented a jiublic testimonial to the Hon. J. Craigie on the eve of his extended tour of Great Britain, Europe and the East. The meeting was representative of all sections of the community, and was marked by much enthusiasm. A lengthy address was presented, outlining the Hon. Craigie’s many services on all the public bodies in Timaru, also in Parliament, and enumerating his many public gifts. The address was accompanied by a handsome, massive silver salver. Speeches made were of a highly appreciative nature, wishing the Hon. Craigie a pleasant trip after a strenuous public life. The death of Mrs Edward Dixon, of Villa street, Masterton, occurred at the Glenwood private hospital, Cole str6et, last evening at S o’clock, after a short illness. Mrs Dixon was the widow of Mr Edward Dixon, who predeceased her

many years ago. Mrs Dixon, who was of a retiring disposition, was ISjSr known for her many acts of to others. A family of four sons alrd

four daughters are left to mourn their loss, ana to them will be extended

much sympathy. Deceased leaves three brothers, viz., Messrs C. Winteringham (Masterton), T. Winteringham (Christchurch), and E. Winteringham (Otaki), and two sisters, Mesdames Kibble white (Masterton) and Bright (Hawera). The funeral will take place to-morrow, leaving the late residence at 3.30 p.m.
