TURF TOPICS. Masterton acceptances close at 9 o’clock to-night. Mr C. F. Vallance’s A Bros extinguished any chance he may have had at Hastings this week by running off at a hurdle in the straight. Many Kittle and Deucalion can be regarded as doubtful starters in the New Zealand Cup. Both are backward, especially the former, whose preparation was interrupted by a mishap last month.

Royal Wink, which accounted for the Maiden Race at Kurow yesterday, is a three-year-old half-brother, by Winkie, to Royal Star. He is a smart sort, and •his victory was well anticipated, as he went out at odds on. • ,

Siaosi, two-year-old, full brother to Civility, will be seen out again at Masterton. He • was conspicuous near the head of affairs turning into the straight in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui, but was not in condition to run on.

A Sydney cable states that Mr H. England has purchased Giggle (Absurd —Chuckle) for 1 £IOOO. The filly was one of Mr A. B. Williams' team taken over to Sydney recently, and was a half-sister to that good horse Chortle.

The following re-handicaps for the Dunedin meeting have been declared: — Mosgiel Handicap.—Corn Rigs 8.6. October Welter.—Corn Rigs 10.5, Piccaninny 5.3. Electric Handicap.—Pap Ilian 8.6, Maungateta Handicap.—Piccaninny 8.6, Balasor 7.12. Taiomo Handicap.—Royal Wink 8.8.

By the way that Gold Light finished on Saturday in the Railway Handicap at Napier Pork, with a pound shy of 9.0 in the saddle, the presumption is that she" will not be very long ere she will be found amongst the winners.

Misgovern, got ripped about a hit through being jammed on the rails in the Alrurird Hack at Napier Park on Saturday. It will be remembered that Mr Prank Ormond’s mare ran second, and/ in the circumstances, did well. Had the luck been, on her side, and she had not got into the bother, she might hav e given, the winner, All Marimba, a harder task to do to score in the event.

Corn Rigs, winner of the principal event at Kurow yesterday, had not started in a race since last Easter. He is a six-year-old gelding by Markhope —Helianthes, and when right is .a useful handicap performer, as he numbered lamongst his defeated opponents last season Silver Peak, Sunny Loch and General Advance. He is trained by D. P. Wilson for Mr W. Gardiner, who used to race that good performer, John Barleycorn.

Ballymena's trainer, “Freddy” Jones, has had a~ varied lot of experience amongst the gee-gees, for as a youngster he rode Gladsome in the Wellington Cup, when she won in 1904, and was also l up on the mare when she triumphed in other contests, and had the •stakes taken away from her owner, Mr J. B. Reid, because Jones at the time was an unlicensed apprentice. He also rodg in Sydney with a bit of luck, and for years filled the position of firsthorseman to the late Hon. J. D. Ormond’s team. At one portion of his career he "made a. trip to England, having been .engaged to go to the Old Land to ride Noctuiform, who, upon his arrival in England, got that erratic in his work that none of the stable lads could manage him. Jones did. not have luck with Noctuiform, who, en passant, it has to be added, won the A.J.C. Derbyin 1905, an event which one of Jones’s pupils, Balymena, secured last week.
