SUBMARINE ERUPTION

PHENOMENON AT SEA. SUVA, Tuesday. Captain Davev, of the Tofua, reports that, at 10 a.m. on July Ist, he sighted a dense column of steam, rising 90 to 100 feet out of the ocean, 19 miles north-west of Nukualofa. Previously the vicinity has always been a pale green patch, but now the sea is bubbling two feet high, steam being visible 20 miles. An earthquake occurred at Nukualofa on the previous day. The area which the steam is rising from is half a mile in extent. The ship was within easy distance for observing the phenomenon. —Press Assn.
