The death has occurred at Featherston of Mr. Donald Scotty aged 79, an old resident of the district. Messrs D. Buchanan and W. Dalziell have returned to Masterton from a trip to the north of Auckland.

Mr Hugh B. Lusk, of Napier, has been appointed Crown Solicitor for Hawke’s Bay, vice the late Mr H. A. Cornford.

Mr J. W. Poynton, S.M., of Auckland, has been appointed sole arbitrator in the Paparoa coal, dispute, and left Auckland for Wellington last night. —Press Assn.

A London cablegram states that Bri-gadier-General Ricardo, D. 5.0., while inspecting a reservoir at Strabane, belonging to a company in which he was interested, fell in and was drowned.

His Excellency the Governor-General will present Lieutenant Commander White-Parsons with the Royal Naval Reserve decoration at an investiture at Government House this evening. Mr W. R. At the quarterly meeting of the Methodist Church a cordial vote of thanks was passed to Miss Winnie Rutter, who for some time has been agent for the Missionary paper of the Church, “The Open Door.” Mrs Wakeham was appointed to succeed Miss Rutter.

The funeral of the late Mr M. Connor, a victim of the Ongarue train tragedy, took place at the Mangatainoka cemetery yesterday. There were over thirty motors and several traps in the cortege. Floral tributes were received from all sports and other institutions.

The death occurred at his residence, 63 Church street, Masterton, this morning, of Mr John Oakenfull, after a long illness. . Deceased, who was born in England, was 64 years of age, and has resided in Masterton for about ten years. He leaves a widow" and one. step-daughfer, Mrs Burr. The funeral will take place at Waipukiirau on Friday.

At the Carterton Football Club’s ball on Monday, advantage -was taken of the occasion to make a presentation to Mr Alby. Desmond, the club’s skipper, in honour of his marriage, which took place in January last. The gift decided on by the club members was a handsome marble eight-day striking clock, and Mr J. D. Hutchison, on behalf of the club, mentioned that a short while back, their worthy skipper had, without notice or permission from his club, got married Mr Desmond had been an active member of the club for many years, and a Wairarapa representative since 1907. They therefore were desirous of expressing their esteem in a tangible way. Mr Hutchison then requested Mr C. Reid, the club’s patron, to make the presentation. Mr Reid called on Mr Desmond to come on the stage, but it was then reported that “Alby, ’’ for the first tim e in his long career, was afraid to meet the “charge,” and had bolted for home. Mr Reid could therefore merely announce that the clock was engraved: “Presented by the Carterton Football Club to A. Desmond, 22/1/23.”
