THE DOCKERS’ STRIKE.
TROUBLE SPREADS. Press Association—Electric Telegraph— Copyrig LONDON, Wednesday. The dockers’ strike is seriously interfering with the discharge of food at Hull. Merchants’ clerks are assisting the crew 7 s to discharge perishable cargoes. Two thousand men at Avoumouth and Portidhead to-day joined the strikers. An appeal by the secretary of the union to honour the agreement was rejected. The strike quickly spread at the 'Loudon docks, and there are now about 6000 men idle in London. So far, Liverpool and Southampton are not affected.—Aus. aud N.Z. Cable Assn.
LEADERS DEFIED. LONDON, Wednesday. It is expected that more London dockers will refuse work to-day. Strikers in London and the provinces total over 20,000. The London trouble began with stevedores refusing to continue unloading the Nariva. The strike extended to the Kaikoura, Raranga, Port Nicholson, Hurunui, and Mahia, all laden with produce from Australian and New Zealand ports. Tiie regular flow of imported meat and other foodstuffs to London and the pronvineial markets will be quickly interrupted if the strike continues. The cause of the strike is that under a national agreement wages were reduced Is a day from last Monday, owing to the fall in the cost of living. The men, however, dispute the Board of Trade figures, and have struck in defiance of the union leaders, who urge the men to honour an agreement in their name. —Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
(An earlier message stated that the men engaged in unloading cargoes of New Zealand meat at the Victoria and Albert Docks had suddenly ceased work.)
