Mr W. Grose, of Masterton, has joined the dental staff of Mr P. T. Priteh- . nrd (Dannevirke). The Rev. J. Cocker, of Masterton, has been appointed reporter of Alliance •■Conference proceedings for the press. t The town clerk of Wellington (Mr J. R. Palmer) resumed his duties this week after several months’ sick leave.

‘ Mrs" Wheeler, a well known resident of Pirinoa, is undergoing treatment in u private hospital at Martinborough. Mrs John Martin and Miss Dymes will leave Martinborough to-morrow for a holiday tour of the North Island.

A Wanganui telegram reports that Mr Robert Tucker, well known as . a Presbyterian Home Missionary, died yesterday, aged 44. Messrs A. L. Morgan, A. W. McKenzie, D. Douglas, J. Beech and D. Gardner, have been elected members of the Masterton Racing Club. Mr J. J. Boyds, who has been appointed president of the Hew Zealand Alliance, is the head of the firm of Royds Bros, and Kerb, merchants, of Christchurch.

Mr F. Martin, who has been assistant at the Working Men’s Club, Grey;town, for some time, has been appointed chief steward, and Mr J. J. Hodge assistant.

Napier is to have a woman candidate for the Borough Council —Mrs J. H. G. Murdoch, who for some time has been a member of the Hawke’s Bay Hospital Board.

Mr V. K. Lemberg has consented to stand as a candidate for the Mauriceville West Riding, as Mr A. Forsberg, the retiring councillor, will not seek re- • election. i

At the meeting of the general committee of the Masterton A. and P. Association yesterday afternoon, the resignations of Messrs T. Gilbert, Giles E. Chamberlain and A. J. Cooper were accepted. A -Press Association message from Napier reports the death of Mir R. C. Magill, a well known Napier business man, who was seriously injured in a motor .-■accident - o-n the Napier-Taupo road on ■■Good Friday. Miss Marie Cleary, M.A., L.L.8., a i.nieee of Bishop Cleary, of Auckland, completed her course in laws .-at the Newman College, Melbourne, and is shortly to be admitted as a barrister . and solicitor. Miss Cleary distinguished Jherself by taking her double degree at •-the same time.

The returning officer (Mr R. Brown) has received the following nominations for the two positions as representatives of the borough of Masterton on the Wairarapa Electric Power Board:— J. C. Cooper (nominated by O. N. C. Pragnell and B. J. King); R. J. King •(nominated by J. C. Cooper and A. D. Low). ' Mr W. H. Jackson (headmaster of the Masterton Central School) last night advised the school committee that the Education Board had arranged for his retirement to take effect on April 30. 'The committee' decided to meet at the ; school on the afternoon of that date and take part in the ceremony in connection with Mr Jackson’s retirement.

At the meeting of the general committee of the Masterton A. and P. Association yesetrday afternoon a- motion was passed regretting Mr A. J. Coop•er’s departure from Masterton, and wishing him every success in the future. Reference was made to the valuable services Mr Cooper had’rendered at various periods in connection with A. and P. Association matters, and to his splendid qualities as a citizen. At the last Masterton show Mr R. O. •Smith took charge of the “freak bullock,” as it was called, and thanks to Ik untiring efforts, assisted by Mr H. Bannister, about £34 was netted for the Association. At the meeting of the •general committee yetserday afternoon a member remarked that no other person connected with the Association had .made such a handsome individual profit for tile Association as Mr Smith. A special vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Smith, and to Mr Bannister, in connection with their services.

Ou Tuesday afternoon the Martinbor•ough Justices of the Peace and members of the bar waited on Sergeant OD. J. Hewit, who has been transferred to Invercargill, to wish him good-bye. Mr Biss, on behalf of the bar, asked Mrs •Hewitt’s acceptance of a suit case and cut-glass jug and tumblers, and in making the presentation congratulated the Sergeant on his promotion. Mr J. W. Kershaw, for the Justices, also spoke, and referred to Mr Hewitt’s efficiency as an officer, and the regret at losing him from the town. He wished Mr and Mrs Hewitt all success in their new sphere.
