BANKRUPT SHOPKEEPER.

CAN MAKE NO OFFER.

GIVEN FORTNIGHT TO CONSIDER.

(By Telegraph-—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Thursday. A meeting of creditors in the estate of Sophia Ellens, a married woman, who resided at Caversham, was held today. Bankrupt's liabilities were set down at £321 15s 3d, and assets were nil. The principal creditors, none of whom were present, resided in Christchurch and Timaru. Bankrupt, in hei written statement, said that she had two small *■ fruit and confectionery shops in Tirqaru, but had lost money, and had to sell out.

The Official Assignee said that it was regrettable that the bankrupt had no (offer to make her creditors. If she could make an offer it would probably save trouble later on.

Mr W. L. Moore, solicitor, said that the Timaru creditors wanted all the pressuro possible brought to bear on Mr and Mrs Ellens to pay. They contended that Mrs Ellens had received money, and that instead of paying her creditors she had handed it over to her husband.

Mr Brent solicitor, who appeared for the bankrupt, said that Mrs Ellens would probably be in a position to make some offer to her creditors, but he could not make any definite- statement meantime.

The Official Assignee expressed the opinion that if bankrupt could make an offer of 5s 6d in tho pound, her creditors might be satisfied. If she failed to do so a prosecution might follow. Eventually it was decided that bankrupt should be allowed a fortnight in which to make an offer to her creditois.
