There "were twenty-five starters in the Maiden Plate at Paeroa, which is an event for horses that have never won a race, and of these there were one three-year-olds, eleven four-year-olds, five five-year-olds, six six-year-iolds, and two aged horses. As the Auckland Star remarks: ‘ ‘ Some' people never lose hope. fi
Writes "The Squire” in the Napier Telegraph:—Mr W. R. Kemball went for a killing at Masterton, and the breeze was with him, for his team won five events and secured a second. He was like unto the Assyrian "who came down likh a wolf on the fold, whose cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold,” that I used to read about when I was a kid, with, the difference that his colours were white and red. The ‘ ■ all-up ’ ’ backers, if there were any of that breed playing •• the ponies on Saturday, must have had a royal period, for the Masterton owner’s team went through without, practically a miss. It was just a case of putting in to take out with interest attached.
There seems to' be no doubt that next session a Bill will be introduced into the House dealing with the question of extra permits, and the attitude of the Labour Party is decidedly interesting (writes "Whalebone.”) One of the more prominent members of the party, chatting with the writer on the subject, said so far as the racing public were concerned they had nothing to fear that any action of the party -would curtail their liberties in regard to the sport. They, however, were going to insist that better provision be made for jockeys, and would vote against any proposal that did not provide for a 7.0 minimum in handicaps, and a 7.7 minimum in hack races. Some clubs also had not made provision for proper ambulance facilities, and if the support of the Labour Party was wanted clubs would do well to take note of their views on the question of the minimum weight and the ambulance question.
It is to be hoped that Mr E. A. Connolly is not going to make a habit of winning the Newmarket Handicap, -writes "Touchstone.”' No doubt the bookmakers particularly will hope so, wlijle, on the other hand, the racegoing public will not mind in. the least, for when Mr Connolly reckons he. has a "good thing,” he proclaims his belief from the housetops, so to speak. And as Mr Connolly’s "good things” have a knack of materialising, the bookmakers naturally get 1 hurt —in their feelings and pockets alike. Last year Mr Connolly made no .secret of the fact that he thought Rostruni unbeatable in the Newmarket Handicap, and* the black horse duly won. Then followed his owner’s .declaration that Rosturm and Fleuriste would run first and second in the A.J.C. Epsom Handicap, and the prophecy again proved a reliable one. "Sunburst can’t lose the Standish,” he told all his friends and acquaintances, and Sunburst won. Great tipping. Ajul when Mr Connolly predicted another sure win for Sunburst in the Newmarket Handicap, and kept, on .backing his opinion with good money, there was nothing to do but follow the tip, and this the public did to such good purpose that Sunburst, started at exactly the same price as Rostrum last year.
