Wairarapa Daily Times [Established 47 Years.] FRIDAY, MARCH 9, 1923. DOMINION FINANCE.
The total Dominion revenue for the eleven months ended February 28th, was £22,440,189, an increase of over £2,200,000 as compared with the previous corresponding period. The expenditure was £22,588,243 and shows a decrease of nearly 2£ million pounds as compared with the corresponding eleven-month period. This represents a highly gratifying improvement of over £4,500,000. It is substantial proof til)at the Government has entered upon a policy of economy. There is, however,' still much to be done in regard to cuttnig down expenditure. The Government has only as yet touched upon the fringo of unnecessary and wasteful expenditure. Not until thc Civil Service Departments have been thoroughly overhauled can it be said that tllie Government has entered upon a course of economy which meets the demands of the taxpayer of this Dominion. The Government lias adopted a wise policy in cutting down the expenditure on our practically useless defence department but much yet remains to be done. The Prime Minister considers that economy is still necessary in regard to Dominion finance, and it is to be hoped that he exercises his powers in this connection to the fullest extent.
