THE MEAT POOL.
Ever since the meat pool proposal was launched thero has been strong opposition shown to it. The opposition comes from those vested interests which have been benefiting at the expense of the producers of this Dominion. Before the pool schemo was mooted and brought into existence the farmers were unable to protect themselves. Unfortunately, two serious mistakes have already been perpetrated in connection with the pool. The first is the allowing of certain individuals whose sympathies are not altogether with the pool, to have a finger in the management, and the second, the fact that it is not proposed to establish shops in Britain where consumers can rely on obtaining good quality New Zealand meat. At present thero is nothing to prevent the American Meat Trust purchasing New Zealand meat at Home, selling it as the product other country, and palming off inferior English or American meat as New Zealand, and thus prejudicing the New; Zealand article. Unless the farmer controls his produce from the farm until it is in the< hands of the English consumer, then the pool will be open ,to tho danger of failure. The trouble in the South Island over tho export tax levy is another of those attempts to injure the pool, and make it as unpopular as possible rvith the farmers. Unless the utmost vigilance is shown by the Meat Pool Board the scheme may yet be destroyed.
