SWIMMING.
A LIVELY DISCUSSION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The action of three members of the New Brighton Surf Club refusing to compete as members of the Canterbury representative team for the Nelson Shield life saving contest at the New Zealand championship meeting at Wellington last month, provoked a lively discussion at the meeting of the Canterbury Surf Association. Tho members concerned had been selected for the Canterbury team, but instead they represented their club at the contest, and New Brighton won the shield. The three members, in' correspondence, gave their reasons for the action. During the course of”’ a long discussion it was emphasised that there was a principle at stake in that in sport it was recognised that when a person warselected to represent a province he must do so unless he bad a sound reason for refusing. ' . A resolution was adopted that the explanations offered wore not considered satisfactory and that they be censured for their action. An amendment proposing the suspension of the members was defeated.
