POLITICAL ARENA
THE CRISIS AT HOME A TORY MANIFESTO. Ciiss Association— Electric Telegraph—Copyrigli. LONDON, Tuesday.
Lord Salisbury, Lord Carson, Lord Finlay, Lord Linlithgow, the Duke of Northumberland, Lord Sydenham, Sir Frederick Banbury, and Sir Joynson Hicks and other representatives of the Tory Lords and Commoners, have issued a manifesto justifying their opposition to the Coalition.
They say that the following principles are essential: Loyalty to the throne, the restoration of efficiency of the Second Chamber. It is the first duty of a civilised Government to protect lives, liberty and property, and crimes such as arson, murder and theft committed for the promotion of political ends must be resisted by the whole force of the State. Excessive taxation and meddlesome regulations are alike mischievous. State interference and multiplication of officials are a hindrance to prosperity. Hasty grandiose schemes of so-called reconstruction are also objectionable. Without extending our national responsibilities the country should fulfil the great duty of firm, unselfish government in territories such as India, which has long formed part of the Empire. Britain is beset with dangers which under the name of Socialism and Communism threaten the existing social system. There are dangers also due to vacillations aud errors, which have defaced public administration since the Armistice and the usurpation by Executive Governmen! of the functions of Parliament.— Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. A COALITION VICTORY. LONDON, Wednesday. The Wolverhampton bv-eleetion, caused by the death of Sir A. F. Bird, resulted: —■ Sir Robert Bird (Coalitionist) 16,790 A. G. Walk den (Labour) 13,799
