DISASTROUS CYCYONE.
IN PORTUGUESE AFRICA. BEIRA, Saturday. The failure to secure telegraphic communication since last week has been explained by the arrival of a runner from Cliinda (a p.ort in Portuguese Africa), with the news that a disastrous cyeline oeeured 'at Chinde on February 24th, followed by torrential rains, which, severed communications, sinking and piling up- all the river; steamers.
The barges and all the storage sheds’ were wrecked, and much cargo was lost and the remainder damaged. Practically every building was unroofed and several collapsed. Shipping communications must be a£ a standstill for some time.
TOWN ALMOST WIPED OUT.
CAPETOWN, Sunday. Beira reports that the town off Cliinde, on the Portuguese East Coast, has been practically wiped out by the cyclone. Only eight houses are left standing. Thousands of bags of.sugar were destroyed. The damage is estimated at' a. quarter of a million. Thirty- five lives were lost. —Aus. and N.Z. Cable Asm
