MASTERTON BEAT CARTERTON
At Carterton on Saturday Mastcrton and Carterton met to decide the championship. Play alternated, first in favour of Mastcrton and then in favour of Carterton, and when on the ID*’ head Carterton had a margin of 13 points to the good, and with tlnee iteams in the lead. The margin was gradually reduced. When three rinks .had finished play, and there was one head to finish by the playing rink, Masferton had a lead of one point. Perry -and Whyte were finishing a hotly eon|tagtcd: game.' Roydhousc, who was Jflhytc’s second, got two beautiful ibdwls a foot in front of kitty. Hunt, Perry’s third, drew the “jack” back, instead of being two down Perry was four up. Fisher and Whyte endeavoured to alter the complexion of .-affairs. Perry got in a fifth counter, .and Whyte had one bowl to play. He Ariel to "drive kitty into the ditch, and, .amid great excitement, missed by the 1 .fraction of a n inch, and left Mastcrton winners by six points, and himself the loeer of the game by one point. At the conclusion of.play Mr. F. Tyler (president of the Carterton Club) .congratulated the Mastcrton rinks upon their win, and handed the Booth Cup .aver to them.
Mr. J. Kerr (president of the Masterton Club) accepted the trophy ou behalf of his club, and then handed Mr Tyler the shield, which Carterton had •won as runners-up. The Park Club entertained five rinks from the Feathcrston Club on Saturday, .a.nd one of the most enjoyable matches of the season was played. The Park had -a fairly easy win, their teams being up in all the games. Featherston had. a number of young players in their teams which probably upset their usual combination. but nevertheless interest was .sustained right through thei match, which was of 25 heads. Afternoon tea was .served in the pavilion by the Park ladies, for whom hearty cheers were .given at the conclusion of the gaiiie. Reference was made, in a neat speech ■by Air. K. R. Sinclair, of Featherston, to the very cordial relations existing between fh'e two clubs, which washeartily endorsed by Air, E. Bell, president of the Park Club.
