KIRKWOOD BEATEN BY ILES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Wednesday. Kirkwood, open golf champion of Australia and New Zealand, suffered his first defeat in exhibition golf hero today at the bands of lies, the Christchurch professional, 8 and 1. The weather was fine, put a strong wind made play difficult. Kirkwood was unable to strike form, and lies obtained the lead in the early stages and kept It. to the finish. A feature of the match was the consistent driving of both, but- the short play, approaches and putts were-badly played by both.
