Some, like Father Bernard Vaughan, arc contending that McSwiney is committing suicide, and thereby sinning against the laws of God and man. They beg the Pope to condemn McSwiney. Others, who compare him with the martyr Saint Eusebius, desire the Pope to accept this view and move the British Government to release him. The Vatican has submitted the matter to the Congregation of Holy Office, which, however, generally takes years to pro-

nounce its verdict. The Lord Mayor of Cork is developing scurvy, and now refuses to take lime juice. McSWINEY weakening. (“The Times.”) LONDON, Tuesday. McSwiney is visibly weakening, and shows .symptoms of scurvy. A specialist lias been called in, McSwiney sent the following message to the 'relatives of Fitzgerald:— “No tears but joy. He died for his country. ’ ’ Another Cork hunger-striker, who has fasted for seventy days, is reported to be in a precarious state. Fitzgerald, the dead hunger-striker, was engaged. His sweetheart endeavoured to have the marriage ceremony performed in prison a week ago, but the authorities negatived the proposal. Relatives were allowed to remove the body. DESIGNS ON VICEROY’S LIFE. (Australian aud N.Z. Cable Association) LONDON, Tuesday. During the trial of a number of youths in Dublin, charged with illegal drilling, the prosecution stated that a photograph of Lord French had been found on one prisoner, containing a written endorsement of an oath to attempt the Viceroy's life. POLICE BARRACKS BURNED. LONDON, Tuesday. The police barracks at Ruan, near Ennis,' were attacked and burned, one policeman being killed and two wounded.
