SHIPBUILDING.

BRITISH IMPROVEMENT. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian aud N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, Monday. According to Lloyd’s Register, the shipbuilding in the Jun e-September quarter shows a remarkable improvement in Britain’s position compared with the rest of the world. The number of British vessels under construction is the greatest in history, over twice the tonnage being building than at the outbreak of war. Britain’s prc-eminonce is being fully restored. In the United Kingdom there are being built 901 vessels of 3,715.1,098 tons. In other countries 1144 vessels are being built, of 3,834,073 tons. The Clyde yards account for 1,327,591 tons. Though the world’s tonnage under construction shows a.net decrease compared with the previous quarter this is entirely due to foreign decreases, totalling 360,000 tons, of which America’s decrease since March, 1919, is 58 per cent.

The world’s total shows a decrease of 483,000 tons since the record figures of September, 1919, but Britain’s total shows an increase of no less than 914,000 tons for the same period. Britain’s vessels in the course of construction, include 229 exceeding 6000 tons and 64 exceeding 10,000 tons. SALE OF ENEMY SHIPS. LONDON, Monday. Lord Inehcape has sold forty-eight ex-enemy ships of 247,000 tons for £4,786,975.
