(By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) LON DON, ' Wednesday. Replying to an appeal from the sister of tho Lord Mayor of Cork asking for his 'release, and stating that if he is allowed to die the relatives and people of Ireland would hold the Government responsible for murder, Mi 7 . Lloyd George telegraphed expressing his profound regret at the pain inflicted on the sister by the brother’s de-j termination to starve himself, but it was impossible for the Government to make any exception in his ease. If it did so, it would break down the administration of the law, as all the prisoners would claim the same privilege*
The Premier has . also issued a statement emphasising the foregoing views, ancl pointing out that the release of the hunger-strikers in Ireland was followed by an outburst of cruel murder and outrage without protest from the politcial organisation to which the Lord Mayor belonged. The I’rentier declares that the very crime of - which McSwiney was convicted'indicated that he was concerned in the conspiracy, against the constabulary, wiiom it was the lirs tduty of the Government to' protest, and concludes that every invitation to the Irmh. Nationalists to discuss a peaceable set-? tlement had been spurned, and the Government's latest offer made in Parliament at the .date of the adjournment scornfully rejected. <( We are driven to fight against the claim for the complete secession of Ireland, north and south, from the Empire. This claim we can never recognise.” MINISTERS THREATENED. (“The Times.”) LONDON, Wednesday.
