TIDAL WAVE.
HOKITIKA INUNDATED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GEEYMOUTII, Thursday. Word was received from Hokitika to-night-that the sea had inundated the northern end of the town. There was a heavy nor’-wester all day, and as tlie tide reached its zenith what is described as “a veritable tidal wave” came up past the houses at 7 o’clock to-night on the beach side of Bevel! street, and the water reached to the Catholic Church in the third block back from the waterfront. The people are alarmed, and will have to abandon their houses to-night on the west side of north Revell street, which has piles of timber and driftwood da the road. The sea came up right-of-ways as high as the window sills, and all outhouses on the beach have been demolished. There were several waves up t.o 7.50 p.in., but the sea after each receded a good distance, taiid it is hoped that the wind will moderate by to-morrow’s tide.
