THE RAILWAY RATES.
The scale of new charges in connection with-our railway's shows that the Government arc out to make up the recent increases given to the railway servants, and a little extra. As the public now have to pay fairly heavy charges in. connection with our railways, it has a right to expect a better service. The biew Zealand railways are probably the worst in the world, and are the joke of visitors front overseas, L Our rolling stock is antiquated, and our system' of management “bristling with brilliancy!-” • Wc are afraid, however, that the people: of New Zealand, if they, desire an improvement,, will require to possess themselves in patience, until many of the seuior officials are pensioned off, and younger and more capable officials take charge. It would b'o a weird and wonderful thing to see our New Zealand railway officials attempting to control the railway system of Lon.lon, or of New York. However, now that the officials have had their wages increased and the public have more to pay in the way of railway fares, freights, etc. we hope to see the public clamouring for some return in the shape of more efficient service. But perhaps we are too optimistic.
