ON THE LAND.

PROFITABLE COW-KEEPING. (By “Agricola.”) “Bywoncr” writes to a South African paper as follows: With reference to the increase in the price of milk, which will mean an increase in income tax assessment, and therefore the Government will benefit, the following particulars may be of interest: Some months ugo I bought a cow for £ls, when the veld wasn’t good and the prices bad. Since the excellent rains and the ultimate rich pasture I have practically written off the cost of this cow, and’now, against the expenditure of feeding, a great profit has been mule. My cow gives on an average 40 brttles of milk per day, which at 6s j c-r dozen works out at say 20s per day for sales, or siiy £3O per mouth, against which fodder costs me at the most 3s per day, ov say £5 per month. These figures give me roughly a clear profit of £25 per mouth, or more than the price of one cow pey, month. Buving a cow every month \Vould give me a net profit of say £1,160 per annum for one dozen cows bought each following mouth for one year. If I sell the milk from these cows direct to the consumer it will be necessary to add to the net profit or a total sum of say £1,546 per annum for 12 cows, on. a capital of £180! Can anyone beat this?

Talk about other commodities, why, they’re not in it with the milk vendor.
