THE COAL HOLD UP.
The coal hold up in Wellington suggests more that there* should Be - some means provided whereby .the. wharf-labourers can be prevented from causing hardship and loss to .the .general public as well as to industrial concerns. There seems to be a continual battle ‘taking place' b^wcen-Tfie~ship-ping’ efljpipani.es ,-ers, and’Waiters'hatfe rea'cned ; fi M4gewhen the general public demand that the Government take such steps as will keep erther side from Bringing about a national disaster, for that is what a continuation of the present bitter relations between the two parties will culminate in. In the opinion of many people the disputes* on the Wellington waterfront are simply trials of strength between the paid agitators of both sides. It is time that both the employer anil employee ‘-dispensed with these paid agitators, whose living depends on keeping Capital and Labour at war, and got together round the tablp with the object of settling their grievances, Tu the present dispute the wharf labourers appear to have taken up an attitude which they were not entitled to adopt. They should have agreed 1 to the Disputes Committee handling ;the dispute, and if a fair decision was not arrived at by the Committee, then they might have had some little justification for their action. The vote takcii at a meeting of the wharf labourers’ union on Monday showed that a- very large proportion of the men were! in faviur of returning to work; in fact, the proposal to. resume work was only lost by about 20 votes in a meeting of over 1000 members. *» ‘ « ___
