GERTRUDE JOHNSON CONCERT. AT OPERA HOUSE. Musical circles of Masterton liave boon raised to a state of -real expectation and pleasant anticipation by the anwnuiKvoinonts which have appeared of the concert wjiieh is to take place at. the Opera House on Monday night. The star of the company to give the v< cital to which all are so looking forward is Miss Gertrude Johnson. She is how touring New Zealand under the direction of Mr. Victor Beck,, pud under the management of Mr. G. S. (!al'iand. Until quite recently Miss Johnson was one of. the principal pnma donnas in the J. C. Williamson Grand Opera Company with which she was in the Dominion early this year, playing tlio soprano roles in ‘‘Lucia di Lnmmermoor' ’ and “ Kigoletto,” etc. In all the [lominion contn's as in Australia previously, Miss Johnson captivated her audiences by the beauty of her voice, and the charm of her personality. She returns after a beneficial rest from operatic work, with a repertoire ot vocal numbers, both varied and delightful. A ala nee at the published programme. fo,r the concert on Monday ui-dir will assure concert goers ot a real musical treat, Mr. Horace Hunt, who is the solo pianist, was interned in Germany throughout the war. In spite of that apparent handicap . he was not deterred from pursuing his musical studies. Mr. Charles Russell, wno is also to appear at the concert, is a Australian flautist of. high repute. The box-plan is at the Bristol Biano Co. “THE BETTER 'OLE.” THE ACTUAL PLAY. At the Opera House on Saturday next, .Tune 26th, the English Musical Comedy Company will stage Bruce Bairnsfother’s great clieer-up piny, “The Better ’Ole.” The play was first produced in London in 191/, and met with remarkable success. . The piece next met with universal favour in Australia, and promises to meet with success in the Dominion. Old Bill, A 1 f and "Erb will be seen in the flesh. Mr. Lionle Walsh plays the role of Old Bill, and his “cobbers” Alf and ’Erb bv the two English comedians, Mr. Hubert Lee and Mr. Harry Young respectively. Miss June Addell is east for Mademoiselle Victoria. Others in the cast are Misses Louise Bascoe, Lena Henry, May Hewlett, Rube Raymond, and Messrs. Sid. Holland, Arthur Bertram, Wilton Bowe.v, and Arthur Simpson. There are several captivating dances, and much bright catchy music. The box plan will be opened at the Bristol ou Tuesday next.
