ITALIAN POLITICS.
According to the cables to-day the Italian Government is position is a. precarious one, owing to the opposition to the Premier’s decree increasing the price of bread and flour. But this is not the only difficulty that faces the Government. Many supporters of N'itti are pro-German and have right through the piece attempted to secure advantages for the Germans in regard to the Peace Treaty at the expense of Italy. Furthermore, these pro-Germans were the individuals who urged the mad poet D’Annunzio to carry on his Gilbortian campaign iii the Filmic region' and who also attempted to play off Italy against the Jugo-Sl'avs and the French against the British and Americans. From their point of view these pro-Germans were justified in their conduct because they knew perfectly well what a muddler Mr Lloyd George was, and how dearly he and President Wilson loved the limelight. Had it not been for France’s determination the pro-Ger-mans in Italy would probably have succeeded in many of their schemes. Gig nor Nitti is a weak man politically, and he now finis himself faced with another crisis of which the pro-German clement is ready to take advantage. Signor Nitti lias been coquetting with the pro-German element and at the same time Irving to curry favour with the Vatican. His is not a bed of roses.
