DECLINE IN PRICES.
During the past „day or two the cables have informed us that prices for many classes of goods and-produce ha\e been tumbling down. This slump in prices is, of course, much overdue, but it is better late than never. The profiteers and their newspaper mouthpieces are, however, putting up a stubborn fight. They wish the public to believe that the decline in prices is only seasonable, and that there can be no permanent drop. There will not be, either, if the profiteer can help it. The public at Home, are beginning to wake up to the fact that they have supported and encouraged the thieving scoundrels who, out of courtesy, are called merchants, and, according to a cable to-day, there is a vigorous economy campaign in progress. In Australia this fight has been going on for some time, much to the chagrin of the profiteers, and it is about to commence in New Zealand. The Prices Investigation Tribunal in this country is more or less of a farce, but it has had one good effect —that of frightening the profiteers andp causing many of them to quietly reduce their prices. The fall in prices means the beginning of the end of the era of profiteering.
