COUNCIL OF CHURCHES SUPPORT GOVERNMENT. (By Telegraph—Press 'Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. At o meeting of tlie Council ot. Churches to-night, the following resolution was passed: —“The Council of Churches places on record its pleasure at the action of the Government, in ending that participation in illegal gambling in which it was involved by the freedom with which bookmakers were allowed to operate their illegal business through the public services of the Post Office Department. The Council urges the Government to proceed to declare by Statute the calling of the bookmaker to be illegal, and to take and use all legal powers for the suppression of the fraternity. The Council authorises the preparation of a memorandum on the mat tty, and requests the secretary to confer with other centres as to the terms and proposals of the memorandum. •' ’
