INFLUENZA.

THE CHRISTCHURCH OUTBREAK. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH,‘ Monday. The threat of a widespread influenza outbreak on the eve of the visit of the Prince of Wales has led to the adoption of certain precautionary measures the city. ■ To-day Dr. Telford, District Health Officer, said that since Wednesday 7 , April 14th, there had been a considerable increase in the number of influenza cases reported in the city. From March 31st the figures had grown to 120, including twenty-two fresh eases .at Christ’s College, which was closed, and ten cases at the Maori pa near Lyttelton. The authorities had decided to close several schools as a precautionary measure. Of the 120 cases, one was ordinary pneumonia, three were influenza, aud the balance were of a mild type. The position was not alarming in any way. The action taken by the Department was purely precautionary, in view of the coming visit of the Prince of Wales. The cause of flu:..sudden outbreak was pr or ably the cold two days’ snap experienced last week. The Boys’ High School has been closed for a week. INCREASE IN WELLINGTON. During the week ended noon yesterday 200 mild cases of influenza and seven pneumonic were reported. In the Wellington Health District, as against 133 mild cases, one severe, and one pneumonic for the previous week. The cases were distributed over the various hospital districts- ns under: Waipawa, 14 mild and 1 pneumonic (Dannevirke). Taranaki, 15 mild. Stratford. 15 mild. Hawera. S mild. Palmerston North, 23 mild and 1 pneumonic (Palmerston. Borough). Wanganui, 42 mild, of which 19 were at Marton and 17 in Wanganui Borough. Wellington,. 6(5 mild, of which 61 were in Wellington City 7 , and 1 pneumonic, also in the city. Wairarapa, 11 mild and 2 pneumonic . (Martinborough). Wairau, 9 mild. Pieton, 7. , Dr. I. E. Faris, District Health Officer, stated that the increased number of influenza cases this last week includes. 32 from the Presbyterian Girls’ ■Orphanage, Island Bay 7 . There were •also, he pointed out, 42 cases at Wanganui,,all mild, happily or about twothirds of the total number in Wellington City. The other cases were spread very well over the district. The cases were mostly very mild. Several schools in the Blenheim district had been closed on the initiative of the local'school committees, and they evidently had. a good many cases there, but as none of them had been reported, the presumption was that they were so very mild that they had not been notified.
