JAPAN AND SIBERIA.

Judging from the cable news received

during the past week, Japan is determined to consolidate her position .in Siberia and to “hang on” to what she has taken possession of. It will be interesting to watch the attitude which the Allies will take up, in regard to Japan. The latter lias solemnly declared that she has no acquisitive intentions in regard to Siberia, and -that her troops in that country arc there for the purpose only of protecting Japanese interests. But Japan told the same story in regard to Korea, and we know how she has held on to that territory. Japan finds that her population is increasing rapidly,- with no prospect of the Land of the Rising Sun accommodating them all in the near future. Therefore, Japan must extend her territory in some direction. But where? Siberia suggests a natural outlet for the surplus Japanese population, and in the circumstances we look to Japan to fight vigorously to retain her hold upon a portion: of Eastern Siberia.. f
