."VISCOUNT JELLICOE-APPOINTED.
His Excellency the Governor-General /announces that His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to appoint Admiral of the Fleet Viscount Jellicoe Oflf Scapa, G.C.8., 0.M., G.O.V.CL, to suctied the Earl of Liverpool as Governoreneral and Gommandcr-in-'Ghief of the Dominion of New Zealand. Admiral of the Fleet Viscount Jcllicoe of Scapa Flow, who, was born m 1859. is the son of the late Gaptaia -John H. Jellicoe, of Byde, Isle Wight, who died in September, UIL He entered the Navy in 1572, and served as lieutenant on the Agincourt duxin the Egyptian war, IS£2. He was on board the Victoria, the- flagship of -.Vice-Admiral Sir George Trvon, when U e was sunk off Tripoli in collision vTith the Camperdown in 1893. From I jit to 1903 he was Naval Assistant to tjMfcontroller, and from 1905 to 190 1 Director of Naval Ordnance. He receiv-. the K.C.V.O. in August, 1907. Lord Jellicoe attained flag rank in 1907 in which year )ie was appointed second in command of the Atlantic Fleet, a post he- held for a year. After serving on shore for two years as Tour'd Sea Lord and Controller of the he again "went afloat in com mand’of the Atlantic Fleet. He was promoted vice-admiral in 1911* which year he was given command. ot the Home Fleet. In the following year he returned to Whitehall as Second Sea Lord.
On the outbreak of war he was specially selected to take command of the Grand Fleet, which he led at the JJattle of .Jutland in May, 19i0. die ' wa# recalled to the as First Sea Lord in December of the- same year. In February, 1915, he was awarded the G.G.B. “in recognition of his meritorious service during the war, ■and in the honours list for the Battle of Jutland he was appointedto the Or■der of Merit. On his retirement iroin the office of First Sea Lord in December, 1917, he ereeived a ..peerage, taking the title of . Viscount, Jellicoe of ■SpJB Flow. Last year Lord Jellicoe to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet. In 1902 he married Miss Florence Gwendoline Cayzer, daughter of Six Charles William Cayzer, -and has one son and four daughters. His heir is bis son, the Hon. George .Tellieoe, who was born on. April 14th, 1918.
