MASTERTON CLUB. In spite of a host of counter-attrac-tions. the opening night of the 1920 season, held in the Y.M.C.A. on Thurs- . day last, was' fairly well attended. As usual the proceedings took the form of a sides match, the following p]avers .taking part, with the follow- - ing results: — 1 W. R. Jones 0, J. Connell 1. .... 11. E. Warner 0, T. Thirtie 1. G. In addition to the above, a number of social games were got off, a very pleasant .evening being the outcome.. The Y.M.C.A., .with the able assistance of Mcsduines Nops,.. Clemas, Connell ' and Murphy, attencTecTUo the supper arrangements, and werernecorded a hearty vote of thanks, for the excellent qomfOrt provided.;;’!The event of importance is the telegraphic match with Auckland, which opens, on the evening of May Ist. Great Interest is being evinced in this match in all chess centres, Auckland being a particularly strong club, and able, to put a ■ f first-class team at the boards.
