THE JOCKEYS’ STRIKE.
WILL NOT AFFECT WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) WEL L INGTON, Wednesday. A meeting of the New Zealand Joc-key-’s’ Association was held here today. The proceedings were private. The Association’s dispute with the Avondale Club was considered, and certain decisions were reached. The secretary- of the Association (Air C. L. Sheath)’ stated to-night cys regarded the dispute with Avondale as an entirely- local one. “The dispute will not affect the Wellington Racing Club so far as we are concerned, in any shape or form,” said Air Sheath. “All the members of the Association will fulfil their engagements at Trentliam to-morrow and on Saturday.” Air Sheath added that the officers of the Wellington Club had always treated the representatives of the Association with every courtesy. “There is no doubt that the racing public have an idea that the jockeys earn princely salaries,” added the secretary. “The Association went to the trouble of compiling a list of earnings of the jockeys for last season. The average of’ all the boys riding was £B9 14s 7d for the season, and from that sum the Clubs deduct 24 per cent. The boys have also to pay their travelling and living expenses while attending meetings. ’ ’ Replying to an inquiry about the jockeys’ dispute, and the possibility of his meeting a deputation from the Jockeys’ Association, Air Alassev said to-day that since he had been appointed Conciliation Commissioner to deal with the dispute, he could not well interfere in it, as presumably matters on which the jockeys woudl wish to address him would be sub judice, pending investigation by Air Halley.
