CHINA AND JAPAN.
THE FOOCHOiW RIOTS,
CHINESE DEMANDS,
(By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Associatijn) (Received Friday, 8.45 a.m.)
TOKIO, Wednesday,
China, has demanded that Japan apol ogise for the Foochow riots and despatch warships thereto.
The demands include the recall of the Japanese Consul, and the punishment of Formosans of Japanese allegiance for killing Chinese students, compensation for the latter J s relatives, the punishment of the Chief of Police, and the prohibition of Japanese merchants carrying arms. It is unlikely that Japan will comply with the request, the authorities asserting- that the students were wholly responsible for the riots,. (A message received early this month stated that Japanese marines landed at 'Foochow from a warship, paraded in the Japanese concession, and unsuccessfully endeavoured to enter the Chinese city. Many Chinese were arrested. According to earlier messages the action of the Japanese was due to anti-Japan-ese demonstrations. The Chinese enforced a widely-spread and apparently effective boycott against Japanese goods since the Shantung crisis arose.)
