ONE CANDIDATE TO RETIRE.
TO AVOID SPLITTING VOTE,
For some time past there has been a movement on foot in this electorate to induce Mr W. B. Matheson to retire from the contest for the Mnsterton seat.
Last" week this movement took definitcTshapo by a representative deputation waiting upon Mr Matheson and asking him if he would abide by the decision of a committee composed of an equal number of his and Mr Sykes , supporters. Mr Sykes had already agreed to this course.
No satisfactory arrangement was then arrived at, but as a result of the overtures made by the deputation, Mr Matheson has since given the matter his most careful cnosideration."
It is understood .that both Mr Matheson and Mr Sykes have now agreed to abide by the decision of a joint committee as to who shall retire from the contest in order to avoid vote-splitting.
A decision will be arrived fl* almost immediately in order to ailow Mr Matheson to explain the position til l»s Masterton meeting on Friday evening.
