Referring to the Dardanelles, "Th© Times" military correspondent says that the single sentence in Sir Thoinasr Mackenzie's report emphasising the vital importance of the period of August; 6th to 10th is the nearest approach to> a summary of the conclusions.that thet report contains^
(In the report published a few dayaf ago the following passage appeared: —* Sir Thomas Mackenzie (New Zealand)[ believes that the vital period of determinating the success or failure was between August 6th and 10th, when? General Stopford and his officers threw) away a opportunity and gay* the Turks time to reinforce. The fail-* ure at Suvla was not due to the opposition of the Turks, but to General Stopford's failure to provide water for tho. troops. Sir Thomas Mackenzie directs, attention to the evidence of several witnesses as to the frittering away of life through General Hunter Weston's repeated frontal attacks, and quote* Colonel Wilson's evidence that live-* ''had to be sacrificed almost with futility, and Sir lan Hamilton's admission., to Lord Nicholson that lives were used instead of shells.)
