The funeral of the late Miss J. son took place yesterday afternoon. On Saturday morning the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church; of New Zealand considered the applications of candidates for the Chair of Old Testament Language and Literature and Church History. There werotwo applicants—Rev. James Cummings, Khandallah, Wellington ,and Rev. Hector Mac Lean, Knox Church, Invereargill. On a vote being taken the Rev. James Cummings was appointed. The* appointment of the New Testament Chair will be made to-day.—Press Association.

A Greymouth telegram states that the. death -took place on Saturday of Edward Alphonsus Burke, in his 75tfc year. The deceased was v well known, i and for many years was the representative of O'Brien, Ltd., oFf Christchurch, boot fnanufacturers. lie travelled the Nelson, Marlborough,,. West Coast and North Island for quarter of a century. Mr Burke was widely known and highly respected as the vet-r eran of the road. He has been a pioneer of the West Coast since 1865. The deceased leaves a. family of five daughters and one son, Mr J. J. L. Burke, examiner of titles in the Deeds Office» Wellington.
