THE CHAUTAUQUA.
(To the Editor.) ~
Sir,—-Some of your correspondents, in their desire to smother Chautauqua, have not considered the subject, and seemingly have not troubled to ascertain the facts. One correspondent stated that the Park was left in a disgraceful condition. This is not according to the caretaker, and at last Council meeting one councillor stated it was left in good order. It was also stated that Crs. Burridge, Perry and Henderson did not support the motion that the use of the Park be granted. Cr. Perry moved an amendment that £25 be charged for the use of it, which Cr. Burridge seconded. This amendment was withdrawn, and on the motion being put only Cr. Henderson voted against it. Further, Cr. Burridge informed me that he was in no way antagonistic to Chautauqua, but, on the other hand, enjoyed the lectures very much. "Sport" should be sure of his facts before rushing into print. Evidently he is not a true sport. The Chautauqua to visit us next month is purely aNNcrw r Zealand concern, every penny profit from which must go towards extending the system in New Zealand for educative purposes or charity- It is registered in New Zealand by New Zealanders, and must conform to the articles of an association. Thanking you, Mr Editor, for permission to make the truth known to tho public.—l am, etc.,
T. F. WATSON.
