John Meagher, a man of independent means, and formerly a racehorse owner of Melbourne, states that he left his wife y in bed at one o'clock yesterday. He returned at four and found his wife in bed with her head battered. A large amount of jewellery was untouched, and there was no apparent motive for the crime.

The husband was arrested and charged with murder, bail being refused.
