Wairarapa Daily Times [Established 45 Years.] SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1919. RUSSIAN POSITION.

It has been announced in the House of Commons by the British Premier that an inter-Allied conference is'shortly to be held, probably in London, to discuss the situation in Russia. The cables recently have plainly indicated that the Allies' foolish policy of intervention in Russia is to be abandoned. Probably the Allies and the Russians have already entered into an agreement to suspend operations. There are two" significant items in the cable news to-day, pointing in this direction. One. cablegram: states that the Bolsheviks have released British hostages. If the Allies and Bolsheviks intended to continue the warfare, it is unlikely' that the Bolsheviks would release valuable hostages. Another cabled item states that the British ships are withdrawing from the Baltic, there being no further necessity to prevent the Bolshevik ships '' emerging from the ice, which will shortly make exit impossible." The "ice blockade" is probably a good excuse for withdrawing British ships from the Baltic. The whole business appears to be enveloped in camouflage, and we'shall gradually see the intervention policy in Russia "fade away and die" out altogether. Russia should be allowed to work out her own salvation, and Allied interference is not justified. The Allied Government has apparently found out that, though Allied 1 interference in connection with the internal affairs of France, after the great revolution, was attended by success, and assisted in restoring the, monarchy temporarily in France, the conditions in the twentieth century are so different that intervention in Russia has resulted only" in faildre.
